IGBT inverter

IGBT converters and generators with state-of-the-art IGBT(insulated-gate bipolartransistor) or MOSFET(metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor) technology combine durability and robustness with high energy efficiency.

Structure and mode of operation

In addition to the coil, the generator or converter is the most important element in an induction heating system. The input voltage is commutated from the mains frequency to a frequency required by the process. The basic structure of a converter consists of the rectifier and the inverter. The rectifier consists of power diodes and converts the mains-side AC voltage into a DC voltage signal. In modern inverters, the downstream inverter consists of transistors that generate the desired frequency through controlled switching operations. The introduction of transistor technology has significantly reduced switching losses and increased efficiency to up to 98%. Depending on the power range, MOSFETs (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor) or IGBTs (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) are used. As a rule, MOSFETs are used in the low power range up to approx. 20 kW, while IGBT converters are used to achieve outputs of several megawatts.
