Induction coils and inductors

Induction coils or inductors are the heart of an induction heating system. Based on the law of induction, the coil transfers the energy required to heat a component. This means that the right design combined with high precision in production are the most important prerequisites for high heating quality and energy efficiency.

Service life of induction coils

In addition to energy efficiency, durability and service life are decisive for the economic efficiency of an induction system. Short service lives mean frequent coil changes, which lead to production downtimes due to set-up and start-up times. Measures to extend service life begin with the design of an induction coil. Choosing the right copper profile and an adequate supply of cooling water can prevent thermal damage. Another aspect is the quality of the winding insulation, which can be divided into the following groups:

Coated induction coils

Coils coated with powder coating are cheaper to manufacture. However, it is problematic to achieve a uniform coating thickness everywhere. In addition, the coating is less resistant and has a lower dielectric strength.

Multiple banded induction coils

Coils that are wrapped in several layers of glass silk ribbon and impregnated with insulating varnish are complex to manufacture (as each layer is applied by hand), but are the highest quality variant. Coils manufactured in this way are particularly resistant and have the longest service life.

Coated and banded induction coils

A combination of a coating and single-layer taping is a compromise between the above variants. It is cheaper than a multi-layer wrapping with sliding silk tape, but does not achieve the same quality and service life.
